Apple unveils M6-powered MacBook Pro and iMac, pushing AI onto the device

Apple introduced a new 14-inch MacBook Pro and a refreshed iMac on Tuesday, both built around its M6 processor, according to Radio Haugaland. The company positions the chip as its most powerful yet and as the centrepiece of a shift toward running demanding artificial intelligence work on the machine itself rather than in remote data centres.

Apple's own figures put the MacBook Pro at up to 25 percent better AI performance and 30 percent faster graphics than the previous model with the M5 chip. For the iMac, the company says AI workloads can run as much as five times quicker than on the earlier version equipped with the M4 processor.

Why it matters

The launch is part of a broader move in personal computing, with more AI processing being handled locally instead of on large server farms. Radio Haugaland reports that Apple is betting on local AI as an increasingly important competitive advantage in the PC market.

Running models on the device can shorten response times, keep more personal data on the machine and reduce reliance on an internet connection. Those benefits depend heavily on software, however. Which advanced features can actually run without the cloud is determined by the applications users install, not by the hardware alone.

What the chip promises

According to Apple, the new machines can handle a range of demanding AI tasks on board. Radio Haugaland lists language models, document analysis and image processing as examples of work that could be done without sending all the underlying information to external servers.

The performance numbers cited by the company come from its own testing. How much of that improvement shows up in everyday use will need to be established through independent benchmarks, Radio Haugaland notes.

Beyond AI, Apple says the MacBook Pro offers up to 24 hours of battery life, which the company describes as the longest ever on a Mac. The laptop also gains support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

Pricing and availability

In the United States, the MacBook Pro starts at 1,999 dollars and the iMac at 1,499 dollars. Pre-orders open on 28 October across 35 countries and regions, with sales beginning on 6 November, according to Radio Haugaland.

Coverage of the announcement also came from Tek.no, ITavisen and TechRadar, with TechRadar characterising the launch as carrying a hidden price increase.

Watch for independent benchmark results and for software support that determines how much of the promised on-device AI capability users can actually reach.
